What Is Kapok? The Story Behind Our Thai Floor Mats

Kapok is a natural, silky fibre harvested from the seed pods of the kapok tree, grown across Southeast Asia. It's been used for generations in Thailand as a natural, breathable padding — lighter than cotton, naturally resistant to damp, and free from synthetic foams.

For decades, kapok-filled mats have been made in Thailand for one specific purpose: traditional Thai massage, which is practised on the floor rather than a table. That's the reason our mats are firm, durable, and insulated against cold floors — qualities built in by design, developed over generations of daily use in professional massage practice.

Here in the UK, most of our customers aren't using them for massage — they're using them for yoga and meditation, as a floor lounger, for guest beds, or for camping and outdoor use. The same qualities that make these mats excellent for a massage therapist's floor — firm support, durability, and insulation — are exactly what make them work so well for those uses too.

A note on firmness: if you're expecting the softness of a conventional mattress, a kapok mat will feel different — by design, not by accident. Think less "soft to sink into," more "supportive surface that lasts for years and won't go flat." For yoga, meditation, lounging, and occasional guest use, that firmness is a feature, not a compromise.
